The Community Development Department strives to ensure public safety, health, and welfare of all Village residents and the business community.

The primary responsibilities of the department include:

  • Enforcement of all building and zoning codes
  • Issuance of building permits
  • Conducting inspections
  • Plan review
  • Monitoring all phases of construction and development within the Village

 Protect Your Family and Community from Radon

Radon gas builds up in homes over time and can’t be seen, tasted, or smelled — making it easy for radon problems to go unnoticed. Any home may have a radon problem. This means new and old homes, well-sealed and drafty homes, and homes with or without basements.

The Lake County Health Department and Community Health Center recommends that all residents test the radon levels in their homes and apartments during the winter season, when indoor radon levels are highest.

“It is estimated that 1 in 15 American homes have high levels of radon, a leading cause of lung cancer,” said Mark Pfister, the Health Department’s Executive Director. “Simple and inexpensive, testing for radon is the only way to know if your home is exposed."

The Health Department offers short-term testing kits for $10.00, available at 500 W. Winchester Rd., Libertyville, or for $13.00 by mail. The cost includes return postage, laboratory analysis and interpretation by Health Department staff. Test kits are also available from area hardware and building supply stores.

If test results reveal elevated levels of radon in your home, contact a radon professional to evaluate and fix the problem.

**NEW- WINTER 2018**  BUILDING CODE UPDATE

The Village Board has adopted the 2018 ICC codes with amendments and the 2018 International Swimming Pool and Spa Code, a code not previously adopted by the Village, and the 2017 National Electric Code.  Implementation of the new codes with amendments,  will be effective January 1, 2019.  

**NEW- WINTER 2018**  PERMIT FEE UPDATE

The Village Board has adopted a new permit fee schedule, effective January 1, 2019.  

**NEW- WINTER 2018**  NEW SIGN CODE

The Village Board has adopted a new Sign Code, effective January 1, 2019 Signs play an important role for businesses and customers.   The Sign Code has been updated to provide fairness to all businesses, help define the Village of Round Lake, allow business individuality while conforming to the Code, for safety, for ease of understanding, interpreting and enforcing the Code, and to comply with legal parameters addressing signage.
